SPIDERS (Weekend Nights) 7"

Some of you have probably heard of Sweden's SPIDERS before, because since 2011 the band has released two 10"'s as well as a digital single. 'Weekend Nights' is SPIDERS latest 7" for Crusher Records and a delicious appetizer for the upcoming album 'Flash Point' that will be released at the beginning of October 2012. Side A kicks off with 'Weekend Nights' which is also the opening track of the upcoming debut album. Due to the vocals of Ann-Sofie Hoyles I am always reminded of The Runaways, but also in other respects there are certain similarities between SPIDERS and the great all-female rock 'n' roll band.

SPIDERS are able to write catchy hooks that remain forever in your long-term memory and this is the most important point in the world of rock 'n' roll. On the flipside we find a cover version of 'Lies' (originally written by The Strollers) which has been exclusively recorded for this 7". At first I thought that I was listening to 'Empty Heart' because the bassline at the beginning is very similar to the Rolling Stones classic, but after a few seconds this initial impression disappears. Even if I have never heard of The Strollers, I must say that I like this tune. It's not as great as 'Weekend Nights', but it delivers further proof that SPIDERS have their shit together. To myself, as a huge fan of hard-edged 1970's rock 'n' roll, this 7" is a very welcome release. Moreover, it's great to see that there are still bands that set a high value on good songs.
